Small Business Server 2008 Standard Edition (Includes Software Assurance and 5 CALs) (English)
Small Business Server 2008 Standard Edition provides small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations — file and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal Web sites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools — in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.
Small Business Server 2008 is only available as a 64-bit operating system and can only be installed on a server with a 64-bit processor.
Here are some notable features of this product:
- Workstations with Internet connections can securely access email, internal Web sites, network files, and business applications; any Internet-connected computer or Windows Mobile–based Smartphone can remotely and securely access email, schedules, and contacts
- The organization is protected from unauthorized users and data loss with:
- Built-in firewall protection
- Automatic data backup and the ability to retrieve and restore previous versions
- Automated patch and update management tools keep workstations and servers up to date, and a daily email report helps identify issues before they occur. A green check indicates that the system is healthy, or the report details actions necessary for attaining green-check status.
- The software includes a sign-up process for Office Live Small Business, a hosted service for customers with an Internet connection who want to take their small business online, and a 120-day trial subscription for two security solutions: Forefront Security for Exchange Server (enterprise-class email protection from spam and viruses) and Windows Live OneCare for Server (anti-malware and security services).
Included Technologies: Small Business Server 2008 Standard combines these Windows server technologies:
- The core Windows Server 2008 technologies, including network tools and network security; file, print, and application sharing; and firewall protection (but not including technologies appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises)
- SharePoint Services for an internal Web site
- Exchange Server 2007 for email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring
- Server Update Services for automated network-wide patch and update managementShared Fax Service
Licenses Included: This product includes two types of licenses:
- A server license
- Five client access licenses (CALs) that can be used for either users or devices
These CALs can also be used to access instances of Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2008, or any other Windows servers within the Windows Small Business Server 2008 domain.

- 60 GB available hard-disk space
- DVD drive
- 800x600-pixel (or higher) display recommended or hardware that supports console redirection
Supported client operating systems:
- Windows XP Professional Edition SP2 or later; Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, Ultimate; Windows Mobile 5.0 or later
Other:
- For some server functionality — Internet access and a Windows Live ID account
- For Internet access — broadband or high-speed-modem Internet connection
- To use fax service — dedicated Class 1 fax modem
Technical restrictions:
- Windows Small Business Server 2008 supports a maximum of 75 users or devices.
- The server must be the root domain controller of the forest.
- The server must hold the flexible single master operations (FSMO) roles.
- The server must be a global catalog.
- There can be no inter-forest trusts or child domains.
- Terminal Services Application Mode is disabled.
